I’ve been doing a lot of reading the last few years on the status of the church. I have found there are a lot of disenfranchised, Un-Christians who are seeking something but often unable to find it in the local church. The latest book I’ve picked up is Gabe Lyons The Next Christian and he reiterates some that I’ve read. However he also gives critiques of how we’ve often tried to be relevant and possibly are still missing the target to some degree by neglecting some of the historic practices.
He says there is a new generation of Christians that are restorers who seek to engage and mend the earth’s brokenness. Their faith affects their careers, relationships and social lives. They look not at only what is wrong but see what once was and what could be. They ask how we got here and don’t just criticize where we are. They hope to create a cultural good and impact millions of God’s creation by helping them rediscover the ideas that have always grounded us. They seek to express his love to those in need, realizing they may not see the conversions immediately but it’s not about keeping a tally.
This is one of the best books I’ve read and I do not hesitate recommending it to everyone.
