A Sound Among the Trees was the first book I have read by Susan Meissner and I loved it. I have always loved historical novels and although this was written in modern day the book drew you into the history that defines the family.

The narrative surrounds a house in Virginia and the family that has owned it since before the Civil War. There are those who believe that the house is haunted because of a rumor that one of the women was a Yankee spy.

The account starts with the marriage of the widow of the great great granddaughter of the rumored spy and thus begins the journey of the new wife to get some answers.

The book becomes more a story of love, loss, forgiveness and starting over.  It also helps bring into some clarity the struggle that many must have had because of family and friends on both sides of the war.

I received this book free from WaterBrook Press for a fair and honest review.
